Peace Museum Statement on Recent Events in Egypt

-for public release on 2011/02/06

The current unrest in Egypt is of concern throughout the Middle East and the world. The ground swell of the Egyptian people in reaction to 29 years of Hosni Mubarak's rule as their President must be acknowledged. The causes of this unrest are many and must be addressed if Egypt is to maintain its influence and continue to prosper. The Dayton International Peace Museum appeals to all parties to recognize the sovereign status of Egypt, the needs of its people and the opportunity for a peaceful and positive outcome of this current struggle. The Peace Museum further encourages that all parties respect the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The Peace Museum supports the recent statement of the United Nations, which stated in part: “...As the recent turmoil has demonstrated, ignoring the root causes of such protests is unsustainable, and concerted, effective and prompt action must be taken domestically and internationally to provide an avenue for peaceful redress of human rights grievances, including the enjoyment of economic, social and cultural rights."

The Dayton International Peace Museum acknowledges the delicate nature of this conflict and hopes that all parties will negotiate their differences with a true spirit of nonviolence in the pursuit of justice and peace.

-Bill Shaw/Chairman of the Board of Trustees
